Movie buffs!
I like to watch movies just like anybody else. The genre of movies people watch, varies according to their taste. Comedy, Horror, Science fiction, Romance, Action, Adventure, Crime, Animation, Drama, Documentry, Thriller, Epic, Biographical, Sports, Fantasy, Musicals, Historical, Superhero, Silent, Melodrama, Satire, Parody...and the list of genre is unending.
While going through some movie articles I also got to know some new genre like - Noir - stylish Hollywood crime dramas, Slasher - subgenre of horror films involving psychopaths, Experimental - also called avantgarde cinema that rigorously re-evaluates cinematic conventions and explores non-narrative forms.
The movie buffs tend to watch movies very seriously. I really fail to understand (and at times envy) how can they memorise the dialogues, the scenes - frame by frame, what comes next, costumes worn by actors etc. They are also curious about what happens behind the scenes, the whole technical and political process of it. They are passionate about movies and its making.
People have their preferences of actors and actresses. Some watch certain films for storyline, some for the actors they like, some for the songs, some also refrain from watching certain movies just because they hate the actors. Some go to theatres for the overall experience - the big screen, the dolby sound, the smell of fresh popcorn, the recliners, the experience of live audience - those 2 to 3 hours, you are actually in a different world altogether!
For movies to be hit or flop, there could be number of reasons.
Some movies are unnecessarily hyped and some aint so popular but could still have a fantastic story or narrative.
I myself, donot much rely on other's reviews. If i want to watch a film I would do it irrespective of 80% people giving it a 'thumps down'. I like to see it myself and decide whether its good or really bad.
I can watch a movie in any language (preferably with English subtitles). Language is never a barrier for you to feel and understand the story they want to put forth. I like to watch the 'makes' and the 'remakes' too. Some South Indian films are really a treat to watch but sometimes its remake isnt that good. I do watch alot of other Asian language movies too. Their ideas, their views, their culture seem interesting to me. 'Movies are universal - beyond flags, borders and passports.
Though not a movie buff, I do watch many movies. It gives me a certain high to go back to my work with enthusiasm, no doubt its refreshing to watch movies, but other reason to watch is that some narratives stay with me forever. I reflect upon them for days, revisit them to have the flavour back when it starts fading away. I cannot recite dialogues word to word or narrate a scene exactly as it is. I aint an expert in it, but I keep the crux in my mind for reference.
Some famous dialogues, when you keep hearing them, are fun .....like -
The one from the comedy 'Andaaz Apna Apna' (this film was a flop when released but later on is considered as a classic now) - "Mark idhar hai, mera naam Teja hai".
or
The famous one from 'Sholay' - "Yeh haath mujhe de de Thakur".
or
The emotional one from 'Deewar' - "Mere paas Maa hai".
or
The showoff one from 'Baazigar' - "Haar ke jeetne wale ko Baazigar kehte hai".
or
The famous goodbye from 'Dilwale dulhaniya le jaenge' - "Ja Simran jile apni zindagi".
or
The one showing the bad state of law from 'Damini' - "Taarekh pe taarekh".
There are so many more to quote but then my blog wont end today!
The movie buffs also known as cinephiles - having passionate interest in cinema - tend to see cinema as a mirror in which they often see themselves. They tend to dream watching these movies. Movies surely are about changing things and making people think.
Though not my favourite actor but I would like to quote him here - "Cinema in India is like brushing your teeth in the morning - you cant escape it". - Shahrukh Khan.
JUI.
Nice, didn't know about all these genres! I'm going to be able to categorize better from now on.

DeleteFind a way to connect movies with life ... what influence do movies have on us?
ReplyDeleteDo we feel disturbed after watching a Madhur Bhandarkar movie like Traffic Signal - a sad ending.
How we feel proud after watching Border? How we feel scared to walk through a lonely corridor after watching a horror movie like Bhoot! Why did we bash up Ramgopal Verma when he made Sholay 2.
Why does Amitabh Bacchan die at the end in Deewar?
Indians probably would have had different social construct if movies portrayed a different cultural and values - the adarsh bahu, the bechari mother, the hero was always wins
Shreyas lovely overview! This could be another blog subject totally... films have powerful impact on our lives!
