Precious daughters....kanyadaan!

"It's a baby boy!"said the doctor. I always wanted a daughter. So felt a bit sad. But my husband was very happy with the news.

Even for the second time, I truly hoped, it was a girl. Everyone around, had told me not to worry, it would be a girl this time. I prayed it was true! So much so, that I had made ready, a list of only girl names, till the last day. But invain!
I felt dejected and disappointed, this time, but my husband again, seemed all excited about it.

"Daughters are so cute, there should be atleast one girl in the house. The house seems lively",
I said. Husband didn't respond. I casually called him a male chauvinist!
On hearing this he said, " Who doesn't like daughters? But it ain't easy to bring one up".

"Ahh! Now that's an excuse", I said.

He brought our wedding album. He turned the pages and opened the picture of Kanyadaan. My husband's palms were placed over my palms. My mom was pouring water, by a spoon, over dad's palm to our palms. My dad was just short of bursting into tears. My mom's kohl was smudged too! "So, Why are you showing me this?", I asked, looking at the picture.

He said, he had never seen his dad cry. But watching my dad in that state, he realized, it's so difficult to give away your most precious treasure.  "You pour so much love into someone, bring her up like a princess and just like that,  one fine day, give her away. Ours was a love marriage. Your parents knew me well. They knew I won't be hitting you or torturing you in any way. Still they cried, after knowing you are in safe hands. What's the guarantee of safe hands for our daughter, if we had one?
Once again, at your sister's wedding, I witnessed the same pain in your dad's eyes. And I thought, I would never have a daughter. For years, you live with your daughter. As you said, she makes the house lively. And suddenly the house becomes quiet. The giggles, the talks, everything stops. Just like that. It really ain't easy for someone like me to accept this",
he became emotional.

I had never seen this side of him.
I felt sorry for having called him a male chauvinist. "

I take back my words, sorry",

I said.
We both went through the remaining album. The last picture of bidaai made it worst!
