And thus the breakup.....Part 2.

 Was he wrong?

Samrat couldn't reach Shalini for days. He kept insisting to talk to her. But Shalini didn't sway. She was firm on her decision to break up. And in few days she left the city.

Samrat had his training for forthcoming tournaments. He had worked very hard to reach the peak. He couldn't leave all this at once. He trained the whole day, cardio, practice matches, running, cycling, swimming. His schedule was overloaded.

He still kept calling Shalini whenever he could. He couldn't get over her. And moreover he didn't know why she had cut ties just because of the injury.

"She can recover. What's the big deal?", he would assure himself. "Let me finish my training, I will go find her soon", he thought.

Days passed, then months and now it was more than a year. Samrat got busier with his Nationals preparation. His coach tightened his schedule. He hardly had free time to even think about anything else. He used to instantly wake up with his buzzing alarm in wee hours of the day. He trained the whole day. When he sat down to have his food, Shalini's face would flash in front of his eyes. He would make a reminder to call her when he finishes his practice. But by the time the reminder beeped, he used to be so exhausted that he would just go to bed.

Choosing his career or his love, this was an arduous decision to make. The years of diligence, commitment and labour that he had put to build his career, could he let it go just like that?

"And What if Shalini has lost interest in me?", he thought. "She isn't contacting me at all. Should I wait for her to come back? Or should I move on?", such questions hovered in his head.

Samrat hadn't accepted the reason for breakup at first. But slowly he started realising the issue. "Even if I go back to Shalini, will she be able to play? Tennis is her first love. And if she cannot play, will she be able to encourage me? And will I be able to dedicate my life to a sport that my wife cannot play anymore? How can we be together? How will our relationship work? Even if she won't show, I know she will suffer each day, when she sees me on the court. She will cheer for me but deep down in her heart, she will have to endure the pain. I can't let her go through this affliction. This relationship will need a lot of time and endurance, which right now both of us can't afford", Samrat kept reasoning himself.

He was on a war with his own heart. But in the end he had to let the heart lose. He gave up on finding Shalini.

"And now the winner in the men's division for tennis, the gold goes to Mr. Samrat", announced the anchor.

Samrat, amidst the cheer and chants of his name, walked to the podium. He received his medal and waved to the crowd and folding his palms in a Namaste, greeted the guests. "I dedicate this award to a special person who encouraged me, who paved my path to this success, remaining far away from the limelight", Samrat said and a tear rolled down his eyes.

Shalini clapped while watching this on the TV set, at her home. Her eyes brimming with tears and her heart filled with pride. "You owe me that, don't you?", she exclaimed.
