"Maa, kaha thi aap? I was knocking since ages". Nalini's daughter rushed inside as soon as the door opened.
"You know what happened today maa, this man on the road was walking and a lady riding her scooty couldn't control her speed and she dashed him. He fell down and the cunning lady didn't even wait to inquire about him. She fled from the scene as if nothing happened. This bechara fellow was in pain and public went to offer him help..........maa, maa...are you listening?".
Nalini slipped into her flashback. She remembered those days when she was learning to ride a scooter. He had held her hands while sitting pillion and "These are the brakes, you must first know how to apply them, else you will dash someone and forget to apply the brakes", he had said jokingly. And suddenly had to hit the brakes himself, asap, when a man crossed swiftly in the middle of the road. Nalini had alighted from the scooter and had stood shivering at the roadside.
"I don't won't to ride this anymore. What if I really hurt someone?", she had tears in her eyes. He had comforted her by running his hand over her head, "Don't worry Nalini. You are a responsible woman, you won't hurt someone like that".
"Maa, Maa", daughter tapped Nalini's shoulder. Nalini came back to her senses. "Navya beta, what were you saying?", she inquired.
"Maa, what's wrong with you today? Why do you seem lost? Are you not feeling good?", Navya put her hand against Nalini's forehead to check if she had fever or something. Nalini removed her hand and said that she was okay.
"What's this Maa?", Navya asked holding the bangle box. Nalini abruptly grabbed the box and slid the letter in it and shut it close.
"Maa, why are you behaving weird today? Kya hua hai? Whose letter is it?", Navya kept inquiring. "I know there are many secrets that you never shared with me. Maybe, I was small then, to understand. But now I'm a grownup. Please vent out and unburden your heart Maa", Navya took Nalini's hands in hers. "Trust me", she said.
Nalini's eyes welled up. With quivery hands, yet again she opened the letter. "Wow! These light green bangles are beautiful Maa. Are they yours?", Navya asked.
"Tumhara kuch samaan, mere paas pada tha. Sawan ke bheege pal nahi lauta sakta, naa hi kiye hue wade nibha paya, bas yeh dhaani churiyan hi reh gayi thi, wohi lauta raha hu", Nalini couldn't stop sobbing after reading this.
"Who is this person who has made my maa cry?", Navya got triggered. She snatched the letter from maa's hands.
Navya read out loud, "When did you get married? I never heard about it. I just came to know that you've a daughter. Hope you are a happy family".
"Doesn't he know I'm adopted maa?", Navya asked Nalini. Nalini's eyes glanced at Navya, but they seemed lifeless.
