Mumma, my flip-flops are broken.
"These are expensive shoes yet see how their sole has come off in less than a year. I haven't been wearing them often too. Cheez mehengi leke bhi kya fayda?", I kept murmuring this to my husband.
My three year old was playing jenga blocks in the same room. The building had grown tall enough, he was carefully placing the blocks one top of the other. Yet, his sharp ears were very much attentive to what I was murmuring. He does this all the time. When I think he's busy playing, I carelessly gossip about someone over the phone with my friends, and later he asks me, "So what did that aunty exactly do mumma?".
He is so quick eared that I've to be very careful while speaking.
So, one such day we were at the market, my three year old son and me. Someone stepped over his flip-flops and the belts broke. I tried to fix it but the hole through which the belts pass itself had cracked. So all my hassle was in vain.
"Cheez mehengi leke bhi kya fayda?", he instantly said. "I haven't been wearing them often too", he added.
I smirked and patted his head gently. The road was under construction, so had gravels spread over. So, I lifted my son up and balancing my purse, the sabji bag and him, started looking for a shoe shop.
He was so excited to be picked up by me. Since he had grown tall, it was difficult to lift him, hence I had stopped doing it now. But he was happy to be not walking anymore and hugged me tight.
We found a shoe store and I purchased a new pair of flip-flops for him. He selected a pair with spaceships and stars on them. 'I like these mumma", he said, as he wore them and started jumping.
But soon, he realised that I won't be picking him up again and he had to walk the rest road. With heavy steps he travelled back home.
After a few days, we were visiting a mall. Mr.Husband was also with us this time. Sonny insisted on wearing his favourite stars wala flip-flops. We were checking out some tees for my husband and we had to hop from one shop to other. Sonny wasn't keen on walking anymore, "Let's go to the play area", he kept on nagging.
However, we didn't pay heed. Now he played a trick. "Look mumma these flip-flops are broken. These were expensive too na? Kya fayda?", he said, facepalming himself. And he raised his hands up in a hope that I will pick him up again.
"I had bought these last month dear, how did they come off like that?", I asked. He nodded his head, "I don't know mumma". I lifted him up and asked hubby to check them. Hubby fixed them in no time as the belt had just come off from the hole.
I placed my son down again and made him wear the flip-flops. His face drooped and he angrily looked at the flip-flops. "I hate these stars and spaceships", he said.
And I knew what exactly it was. His trick hadn't worked and he had to walk again.
I told Mr.Husband about the drama and we both shared a laugh. Mr.Husband quickly bought the tees and we treated sonny for his favourite icecream.
"When you walk, you become fit. It's a great exercise. And then you can have lots of icecreams too", I tried to convince my son with some mommy wala gyan.
