A much adorable granddad!
He was always a busy dad. He slogged, he worked hard. We didn't get to see him often too. He was transferred to another city for nearly 8 years. Our growing days, both my sister and me, we had to depend on our mom. My grandfather and grandmother were with us too. They guided us, protected us, loved us. But we surely missed being with him.
They say daughter's first love is her dad. But somehow we missed a major part of it. He had to stay away from his family for years, only to give us better education, bright future and happy life. He made sacrifices for us, as grown ups we give due credit to him now, acknowledge it wholeheartedly, but as kids we couldn't apprehend this. We always thought dad's never there for our Open day, Sports day, Annual functions.
But the day he became a Granddad, his happiness knew no bounds. The person who wouldn't leave early from his office, come what may, or take a leave even after falling sick, the same person would rush home to play with his grandson. His smiling face would light up my dad's face. I hadn't seen such a glow on his fatigued features before. The joy he experienced after lifting my little one in his warm arms, it was incomparable.
He celebrated along with me, my kid's milestones which he had surely missed in my babyhood. He applauded my baby's flip, he jumped in excitement as I did when my baby crawled.
He was still working when I had my first kid. But for my second one, my dad had already retired. So it was like a boon for my baby and me. He was there from day one with us. Mom and me would also leave the baby with him if we had some quick work in the market. He happily changed the nappies, put baby to sleep, rocked his rocker.
My younger son would jump to his Aba(granddad) as soon as he saw him. He still prefers his Aba over me.
Whenever I visit my Maika, my dad has events planned for the kids. He teaches them to make kites and fly them. Badminton lessons are on, wall painting is in process for our compound wall. They enjoy action packed movies together.
My dad has always encouraged us, daughters, in all our endeavours. Be it education or extracurricular activities. But when it comes to his grandkids, I will always say he's a tad bit better granddad than a dad.
