Choose your friends wisely!
We all know the famous Panchatantra story of the monkey and the crocodile.
The monkey and crocodile became friends, but the crocodile's wicked wife had other intentions....of eating the monkey's tasty heart.
Being an extrovert, I love to talk to people and as a result make friends within no time.
When I was in school, I used to think that every person who talks sweetly with me, is a good person. Well, we all act silly at some point in our life!
But as I started getting matured, I got the real meaning of the story.
Choose your friends wisely....they will make or break you.
Folks come into your life with many motives. They wish to gain something from you. Maybe some help in studies, might be because they are feeling lonely for the particular time period and need somebody to just be there, who can be ditched later, when not needed. They want to use you as ladder to step up, which they dispose off once they are done benefitting. Would you call them your friends?
Beware, they are out there, waiting to exploit you. The fake friends, disguised as bona-fide, using your shoulder to lean on. And when you turn your face, "She's such a loser", they blurt. Just put up a "Not interested' sign, that's all.
Choose friends who celebrate your success and not feel jealous of your achievements. "You got a medal, congratulations! The competition this time wasn't that tough, right?". Just say Thankyou and block them forever.
But remember, every friendship is a give and take, so it applies to you too.
I read this quote somewhere,
'Association is perception, perception is reality'.
It reminded me of the story once again.
But how do you differentiate? It's a difficult task. The sugar coated lies, comes across as truth, many a times. The masks that they wear are deceptive!
The ones who leave us stressed out, depressed or frustrated, let's keep ourselves away from them. Don't forget, friends affect our emotional health, by and large. Being kind and considerate is okay, but we aren't under any obligation to be friends with anyone. Be straightforward, learn to say goodbye.
Friends should be the ones who motivate you, inspire you. The ones trying to bring you down, are a big No.
If you are honest with your friends, you've all the right to demand the same, from them, you need two hands to clap...don't you?
When you spend a large amount of time with someone, you tend to pick habits. Alright then, there's more reason to be in a good company.
Stick to the quote, 'I would rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies'.
Quality over quantity it is!
In the Panchatantra story, another highlight is that the monkey shows presence of mind to save himself, in the end. Clearheadedness, if I can call it so, saves life. What do you say?
AUTHOR'S NOTE:
Panchatantra stories that have given me important life lessons are many. But I chose this particular one, for the blog, as it involved friendship. Every day we need someone to share our happiness, our woes, vent out things, share our secrets. Family is always there but friends are equally significant part of our lives. We can't choose our family, but friends, we can!
