Gangubai Kathiawafi and Woman's Day!
"Happy Women's Day!", my mobile beeped early in the morning. "So how are we celebrating Women's Day?", the obvious question of the day aroused, in my girl gang WhatsApp group. "I want to watch Gangubai, is anyone interested?", I texted.
All voted a yes and we booked the evening show.
As we reached the multiplex, in one of my friend's car, which she herself drove (Yes! Women have come a long way from turning the hand driven Atta chakki to turning the steering wheel).
At the entrance of the mall were herds of women, all celebrating their day.
Yes, I know what's so special about this particular day? Isn't it just like every other day? You get up, you cook, you send your kids to school, you get ready for your office, you go through the same routine as you did yesterday. But nevertheless, today you get another reason to be with your gang, be with women who are always there for you, who care for you, who are growing with you. Just another reason to celebrate!
So we were greeted with a smile and a Happy Women's Day wish right from the security guards to the liftman. The lady who checks you before you enter the mall too greeted us and we happily wished her the same. It was her day too, yet she was there doing her duty just like any other day.
So, stocked up with popcorn, coffee, sandwiches, etc etc, we got seated.
Gangubai Kathiawadi, we all had our share of expectations, our research, our viewpoints, assumptions for the movie, before we went in. The movie got us so much hooked, that, not a single second did we budge from our seats. The dialogues, the dialogue delivery - bang on....and Alia Bhat, she shone like a polished diamond, carved himself by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
For every dynamic discourse from Alia Bhat, I wish, I could whistle aloud. I hadn't carried a whistle with me, else I surely would've.
Gangubai's character, her story and the things she has done for women like her, is prodigious.
And here we keep crying for small things that don't happen the way we want. We keep complaining even after having so many fantastic possessions.
And on this Women's day, I kept pondering.....What about those women like Gangubai? Should they celebrate that they are women, because of which they can earn their living? Or should they commiserate being a woman, because of which they are pushed into such filthy dungeons?
Happy Women's Day!
