Magic potion- kadha.

This magic potion called Kadha, my Mom-in-law used to make whenever someone was suffering from cough or cold in the family. But after COVID it's here to stay in my kitchen.

Like they say Hocus Pocus, I need coffee to focus....Yes! I need it. But this is also a patronised drink that I brew daily since two years now. It has verbatim, replaced tea, in my house. Even my kids love to sip it every now and then, when they feel the pull in the throat.

As I sip from a cup of hot and fragrant kadha, I thought "Why not share the recipe of kadha with all of you here?".

The only prerequisite for this concoction is a Tulsi plant, rest all is available in the market or is already there in your kitchen shelf.

Preparation -

1. Take a stainless steel pot or pan (half a litre). Fill it with drinking water just below the brim. Keep it on the gas to boil.

2. Add tulsi leaves ( fresh and washed), coriander seeds 1 tablespoon, cumin seeds 1/2 tablespoon, 2-3 peppercorns, 1/2 an inch cinnamon stick, 4-5 cloves, small piece of jaggery, ginger 1/2 an inch(crushed). You can use ginger powder(Soonth) instead.

Add liquorice powder(Jeshthamadh) about 2 tablespoon.

3. Stir in everything and allow the concoction to boil. The concoction should reduce below the previous mark of water, which makes it a kadha.

4. Strain the mixture and drink it hot/warm as you prefer.

This is good for your immune system and is very effective for coughs and colds.

The ginger, tulsi, jeshthamadh, cinnamon and cloves are well known for curing cough and throat infections. The cumin seeds and coriander seeds cool our body, preventing the concoction from causing heat problems. Also the jaggery makes the concoction taste better.

You can also use a little bit of curcumin powder (pure form of turmeric for medicinal use) if available. It's better than the regular turmeric we use.

With increase in allergic throat and nasal infections these days, this Kadha comes very handy and you can make it and store it in the refrigerator for two days. Just heat it and drink whenever you want to ease the irritating throat.

Hope this recipe proves useful to you. Cheers! With a cup of magic potion.
