Screen and eyes.
"Please shut the eyes and the screens for sometime", I said to the kids. "You are watching the screen since 4 hours now, it's going to strain your eyes", I rolled up my eyes. But kids were unmoved.
The pandemic definitely, is making our kids lazy and hooked to the screen. They don't want to go out, exercise, play outdoor games, nor do they want to learn something new.
The online classes ain't very educational either. It's not the same as facing your teacher and being present in the class, physically. Moreover attention span of kids is limited and on the top of it, if classes are online, it's tough for them to not get distracted. The YouTubes and like ones, are already a click away, to add to the deflection.
I continuously keep telling my kids to take a break, move around, just jump or stretch, or just close their eyes, sit back and relax.
Continuous and long exposure to screens, end up with dry eyes. Then kids keep rubbing their eyes, causing more friction and irritation to eyes. There are variety of blue light filters available, nowadays. There's also these spectacles, designed specially for kids to protect their eyes. But the most important thing is reducing the screen exposure time.
Every kid has his own device, thanks to the online culture. Even if they meet their friends (which is rare), all have their mobiles or tabs in their hands, and are playing online games sitting in one room. They communicate through texts or over the mic, while playing games. I hope they don't forget to talk face to face, in coming days and won't lack social skills.
The parks are closed, so are the playgrounds. Some societies have banned kids from playing together in their premises. Also the sports that were played at school have totally halted. Online sports is, not at all appealing. Hence we cannot blame our kids entirely.
This generation of kids are missing so much, by just sitting at home. I understand that we cannot control the situation right now. But interactions with friends, sharing, fighting, running around, all this and much more, is part of their development. It's like, the chapter from their life is being omitted.
So I would like to tell my kids and all your kids just one thing - Please shut the eyes for screens and open the brains to think!
