Timeless tales of chocolate and more....

We were decorating the cake together, my sons and me. It wasn't for any occasion, just that my elder son wanted to bake that day. He didn't wish to deck it up with any icing or butter cream so we opted for 'Gems' (TMI - not the precious one's! The chocolate one's).

These colourful circular candies, which can neither be called a chocolate nor a candy....ask me why? They have very little chocolate to call them one and sparingly sugar coated to put them under candy family. But are perfect for such decorations and garnish...ain't they?

Gems we used to get in our childhood, were actually filled with more chocolate and the sugar coating wasn't bitter like the one's now....I said this aloud and my kids started to giggle....Ah! Here she goes with her Throwbacks again....no doubt it's the #ThrowbackThursday, said my elder one.

I gave him a stern look..... my eyebrows twitched..no..no..it wasn't caffeine...I got triggered by his comment and decided to narrate a throwback story and what better a topic than Chocolates?

Have you noticed that the sizes of all the chocolate bars has reduced as compared to what we had in our childhood?

The packings are more attractive, may be fancier, but the tastes have changed in due course.

Diarymilks remain yet unbeaten...right? There may be silks, oreos, red velvets but for the authentic Diarymilk bar, it's a cakewalk to conquest (Brilliant metaphor right hahaha!).

You know what! We as kids, used to get chocolates only on certain occasions, like a birthday party or when someone passed the boards, some school functions or some very very special day (Didn't want to  specify Valentines in front of kids...that's a totally different topic for another #ThrowbackThursday!).

And yes....when someone travelled from foreign countries, those exclusive, imported chocolates like Kitkats, Snickers,  Milkyways, M n Ms....the kids interrupted... What Kitkats and all these were not available in India? They were surprised.

Yah!Yah! I know, now your refrigerators are screaming Eureka, beaming with all these Ferrero Rochers and Toblerones. But for us, it was a treat we got, when relatives, friends brought these chocolates for us and we saved them for days and relished. We didn't solely save the chocolates, but also retained the wrappers. Smoothening them with scales or pencils, making dolls out of them, scribbling secret notes, keeping them safe in books, under the beds or time capsules....I was sharing the flashback story...and my younger one asked, A time capsule..what's that Mumma?

For a generation who throws things away when they stop working, not intending to repair anything, just getting a new one from Amazon at a click....Time Capsule would be an antique!

A treasure trove of memories...a box, where in you safeguard what's precious to  you and keep it in a secret place or just bury it so that you could dig years later to find the cache...just like your treasure hunt...I replied.

Wow! Sounds fun....he was 8 then, so was curious and also thrilled to do something like this, while the elder one, a teenager, so you must've guessed by now (teenage = considering these as childish ventures), he didn't sound excited at all.

We visited my mom's place the next week. My younger son (Yes, the enthusiastic one), suddenly came to me and asked, Mumma you'd told us about the time capsule na, where's your's? Is it at Nani's place?

Oh! Yes, it is dear. I was equally excited to clear the husk of my cache and unbolt the reminiscence.

Both of us opened the tin box, my time capsule, that I had stored deep inside the secret drawer of my cupboard. The elder one quietly followed us...Ah! he was as curious as us after all!

The box had wrappers of various chocolates in all shapes and forms, old coins, dried seeds of certain plants, chits of papers and what not. The throwbacks were getting heftier!

What are these Mumma, did you smoke????? Younger one startled me.

Noooooo! I exclaimed, Those are phantoms. Candies that came in cigarette shape. Well, I doubted my choice in candies for a moment there!

Hahahha! These are fun...can we get them now? He asked, elder one now more inclined to hear me. I don't think so, I answered .

May be I was just cautious for his choice now.

Phantoms....got to know from my friend that you get those still....oops!

That's how our retrogression (in a good sense) came along. Throwbacks are Thrilling....right? Little moments, big memories!

Happy World Chocolate Day!!!
