Tumhara pyaar, bachpan ki nishani....Meri Nani!
Nani, the topic is very close to my heart. As my husband says, I am very lucky to have had received blessings and love from grandparents of both maternal and paternal side.
Both my Abas (grandfathers), always guided me whenever I needed help. So also my Aajis (grandmothers). They were also by my side, even after I delivered my babies. To help me navigate through the beautiful journey of motherhood.
I dearly love them all, but I was always close to my Mom's mother. She is no more with us, and I miss her so much.
She wasn't an educated lady. She had passed her fourth grade, when she lost her parents. Hence, her studies were stalled. But she always urged us, sisters, to study well and have a good career.
This is a small dedication to her, from my heart to hers!
Her hug was soothing, healing it was,
Never enough, exactly that feeling, it was,
Laying down with head in her lap,
Catching a blissful, summer afternoon nap,
What else would've had wished for more?
I guess, I could've loved her a little more.....
Aaji, you always spread around mirth,
You were an epitome of warmth,
A beautiful smile you would invariably behold,
Cosy enough to subdue the cold....
Ever ready to cook our favourite food,
Even if took hours, you calmly stood,
Kitchen was your home turf, I would say,
Where you happily spent your day.....
You weren't adequately educated,
But reading newspaper, everyday, you accentuated,
Learning new things was always your agenda,
Girls should study and become independent, was your propaganda....
You were strict were you had to be,
Injustice, malpractices, you couldn't tolerate to see,
You spoke your heart out without any fear,
Your opinions you made them clear....
Our family, relatives, you loved the get-togethers,
Inviting everybody, greeting each other,
You had a fabulous equation with big and small,
Be it neighbours, courier guys, or delivery persons from mall.....
Words are free, why not use them nicely?
Your kindness, polite talks suggested this precisely,
"Aaji let's go shopping", when we said,
You were ready, dressed elegantly, hair up in bun and braid....
Heat of the sun melts the snow,
Torridness of each passing moment, fades the anamnesis, likeso,
Nevertheless, I detest, when frosted memories melt away,
Reminisces of beloved ones, snatched and thrown faraway.....
I want to remember all those affectionately tender moments,
That I spent with you since my birth, until recent,
Your snuggly hug, your smiling face, your affable essence,
It's right here with me, I can still feel your presence!
Dear Aaji, you will eternally be a treasured memory,
Will keep you alive through my words and my poetry!
I read somewhere, 'A grandmother is both, a sword and shield', and you were exactly like that Aaji.
