Turning back time - Part 1.
I was sitting in a ride with my kids, in an amusement park. This ride took us through a zoo, where we could see animals from a far while there was a running commentary going on to tell us more about the animal we were watching. I loved this concept. "It would be awesome if we could have an amusement park where they would take us to old days", a thought struck my mind.
I keep on telling my kids, stories of my childhood. But if they get to take a ride through those experiences, How wonderful it could be!
And in my mind I hoped onto the excursion.
The first scene was a Telephone booth. People queued up outside this dandy spot, just like a famous restaurant. The commentary went something like this......This glass enclosure, where your conversation was partially audible to the audience outside, yet giving you the cozy feeling of your tete-a-tete, keeping it secret enough. This cool invention was a blessing for loved one's, miles apart, to communicate and remain fervid. Sharing a good news with your parents that you've got a job in this new city or telling your dear one's you're a proud father whose daughter stood first in her boards. There were no virtual emojis nor effects or filters, simply your words festooned with your honest expressions, that were conveyed.Telephone booth was like a banquet to express your felicity!
I recalled how we used to go to our neighbours to make phone calls when there wasn't one at our home. Later when we had one, and as the telephone bell rang everyone raced to pick it up. It was fun growing up like that.
I was happy once again revisiting this scene. And my mind advanced to the next spot.
Here, was standing my favourite red hot ovoid container. Wearing a black hat, it looked affable. The Postbox is the next attraction....said the commentary. Postbox was another medium that facilitated communication. People who were far away, even across countries, could send handwritten letters, greeting cards, postcards conveying happiness and sorrow.
I loved writing letters. Be it Rakshabandhan or friend's birthday or any occasion, I used to rush to a stationery store to get those colorful letterpads, glitter pens, stickers. Embellishing my words with all available trinkets, I happily sealed the letter and strolling down the road went to post it in the postbox. The contentment it gave me was indescribable, always brought a smile on my face. It cannot be compared with the new era emails or text messages with those lingos, half words eaten up.
....This is how this red box functioned....the commentary ended.
My kids were in awe as to how could we wait for days to receive replies to our letters. You had a lot of patience mom! ....they exclaimed.
The bygone days were exciting and full of enthusiasm. Everyone had time to wait, ponder, hang in there and hold back. Not everybody was in a rush, not everyone was running the rat race.
There's much more to explore, I said.
And the ride moved to the next spot.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Sometimes I wish I could just rewind back to the old days and press pause....just for a while ~ Unknown.
