When reality exceeded my expectations- 1.

 A Fiction tale -

As a middle class girl, my expectations from life weren't extraordinary. After finishing my graduation, I had always dreamt of getting a job in a good company. A decent salary that would support my dad's income. Our family of six, my parents, my grandparents, my sister and me, would happily sustain.

My mother took food orders from acquaintances. It was like a freelancing activity, but it added to her kitty to provide for us. It wasn't a huge sum, but gifting on festivals, marriages or other celebrations, were atleast taken care off, by her income.

I used to help her out when orders were huge. I had learnt variety of dishes in the due course.

We were attending a wedding at our cousins place. I was dressed in a beautiful magenta saari, which my mother had gifted me on my last birthday. My mom put a kala teeka with her kohl behind my ear, You look gorgeous, she said.

I was helping out my Kaki with arrangements, when my mom and Kaki were discussing something. I overheard them....What?....Marriage .....My marriage? So soon? I shrieked.

Hush! They both silenced me. A very reputed family, acquaintance of your Kaka asked about you in the wedding today, Kaki said. My mom was attuned too.

But what about me working? I wanted to help dad out...... My mom intervened, If you get married both your dad and me will be more than happy. And if it's a family like this one, it's cherry on the cake.

And within months it was decided that I am getting married. The family was really good. My would-be husband was also a good match. He was educated, settled and hardworking.

Soon we got married. It was all like a dream. I felt like a princess. My FIL and MIL were loving and caring. They enjoyed my cooking. I had settled in this new life. But the reality was too good to be aligned to my expectations. We were well off and a working DIL wasn't a necessity. I wanted to work though, not to earn a living now, but staying stagnant wasn't my forte.

I talked to my mom over the phone and she told me she had tried a new recipe for her orders. And as I was talking to her, an idea came to my mind. I hung up and rushed to discuss it with my husband. I said I wanted to start a home kitchen. I told him that I already had experience of my mom with me and she would happily join me in this venture.  My husband already loved my cooking. He gave me a thumbs-up and the work began.

From a dream of getting a decent job in a company to starting my own business, the alignment of expectations and reality wasn't easy. But hard work, opportunity and yes, luck favoured me.

Today I stand proud as a woman entrepreneur who has the support of both her families.

Reality doesn't always disappoint you, many a times it exceeds your expectations.
