Shraddha's Tulsi.

"You know what? You should add a leaf of black Tulsi when fermenting Dahi and don't let it ferment for long. Make your Mother-In-Law (MIL) eat this everyday, it will surely help", said one of her relatives to Shraddha.

Shraddha was a newlywed daughter-in-law of the household. It hadn't been 4 months and her MIL was detected with cancer. Shraddha came from a lower middle class family. She hadn't brought in much with her, in the marriage. Few kitchen ware items, some warm quilts, some basic jewellery and a black Tulsi plant.

Her dad always told her about how medicinal the black Tulsi is! So he had given her one, during her bidaai.

Shraddha's day always started with watering the Tulsi plant. Joining palms, she would pray for well-being of everyone. In the evenings, she used to lit a diya besides the plant and pray again.

Today she went to water the plant, pluck some Tulsi leaves. She followed the instructions and fermented the dahi accordingly. She gave it to her MIL with the lunch. Shraddha's in-laws were affluent and very understanding. Shraddha too, day and night, served her MIL. They had house helps, but Shraddha insisted on doing things for her MIL, herself. Her MIL too, even if bedridden, would give tips on cooking to Shraddha. Shraddha would read out her MIL's favourite books to her. MIL instructed Shraddha while making authentic recipes for pooja and festivals. They shared a special bond!

"A daughter-in-law cannot be perfect by herself, a beautiful MIL helps her be one! "- unknown.

Shraddha's FIL and husband, hadn't left a stone unturned. They had taken her MIL to n number of doctors around the town. But her MIL wasn't getting cured, as should've been.

They, then, decided to take her to an Ayurvedic centre. The reports were shown, the treatment was discussed.

Shraddha noted down everything she had to do.

Next morning, she, as always watered the Tulsi, prayed, pluck leaves. She again fermented dahi with a leaf. She also made some ayurvedic kadha using the rest of the leaves, some cinnamon, some ginger, some turmeric, some jaggery and some medicinal herbs given by the vaidya. Shraddha diligently fed all this to her MIL.

The medicines and black Tulsi started working wonders! Her MIL who was bedridden, slowly started to come out of her room. Sat in the garden, chatted with Shraddha in the kitchen, read newspaper in the living room. In the evenings, Shraddha and MIL started taking short walks in the courtyard. Shraddha told her MIL that her dad says Tulsi plant emits alot of oxygen, it purifies the air coming into the house. So her MIL should walk around the Tulsi plant everyday.

Her MIL was happy to have a daughter-in-law like Shraddha. MIL got better and their bond grew stronger, each day....The witness was the black Tulsi plant!

AUTHOR'S NOTE: The black Tulsi plant is truly medicinal and the dahi fermented with it, is actually anti-cancerous (not claiming to treat cancer).
