Sitcoms and the 90's.
"Hey! Mungerilal stop day dreaming and finish your homework"... my mom used to say when I dozed off while studying. Mungerilal, a funny character played by Raghubir Yadav from the sitcom 'Mungerilal ke haseen sapne"... he was a day dreamer. He used to build castles in the air and finally end goofed up or something and we all had a good laugh watching it.
90's was an era when the whole family used to finish dinner early and sit together to watch TV. There was no OTT, no online games and moreover no individual devices for entertainment. So it was kind of a happy family time. The series, sitcoms aired were also clean family entertainers (unlike today's bold content with abusive language).
The other sitcom which we enjoyed was 'Wagle ki duniya'... the middle class Wagle family had those down to earth values. Their money saving techniques, at times stingy behaviour, all presented humorously, was worth watching. They would stitch dresses and shirts, curtains and table clothes for the whole family, in the same yard of cloth, to save money. It strikes me now, the word 'twinning' must've been invented then. Now its a fashion statement but then, siblings wore dresses stitched from same cloth because it was economical.
Shaktiman and Captain Vyom subjugated kids' mind totally. Mr. Mukesh khanna taught moral science whereas we embarked on a space trip with the handsome Milind Soman! 'Potli Baba ki' ...this beautiful collection of fairy tales in the form of puppets, was directed by Gulzar Saab himself. It was aired every Sunday and we children used to come running towards the TV set when the title track went..."Aaya re baba....Aaya".
The 'Tu Tu Mei Mei' gave a complete dose of Saas-Bahu 'Nok-jhok legend' while 'Chandrakanta' brought in the fantasy with Prince and Princess, fairytale-ish style.
Mr.Jaspal Bhatti, one of the great comedians in India, presented his satirical take on the societal issues, in 'Flop Show'. His skits and sketches were fun to watch. While on the other hand, Pankaj Kapur took us on an investigative expedition with his 'Karamchand'. The prices of carrots must have boomed then I guess, because he was always shown eating carrots when solving his cases.
'Surbhi' was like an Indian Cultural Magazine, providing insights about India and its beautiful unknown stories and tales. It was like a Wikipedia on India, for us then.
Then came in the cable network wave. Slowly, shows with Western influences started to peep in. 'Hip hip Huray', 'Campus', 'Banegi Apni Baat'..were some of the cool shows highlighting struggles, issues and wonders of school and college life.
'Antakshari' was a show everyone used to enjoy, whole family guessing the songs and singing together, Oh! What fun it was!
That was the 90's for me. Trends keep changing, but the life goes on...You catch up the pace yet keep looking back....as if reminding to yourself..."In a world full of trends, I want to remain a classic!".
