Navya hugged her maa, "Please tell me who is this maa?", she urged Nalini. Nalini sat down on the chair with a thud. She had held this secret close to her heart for 21 years. But this time, she couldn't hold it anymore.
"He is your father Navya", Nalini said gripping Navya's hand. "Please forgive me beta that I didn't let you know that you were not an orphan", before Nalini could complete Navya interrupted, "So you are my real maa? I am your daughter?". Navya's eyes had a twinkle just like an innocent toddler looking at her mom. Nalini pulled Navya's hand closer and made her sit besides her.
"It is not that simple beta", she said as she sighed. Navya was perplexed. "Maa please no more secrets. You've to tell me everything today. I'm ready to listen", she assured with teary eyes.
"Yashovardhan met me when I was in college. He was my senior. We grew fond of each other. We started meeting more often, first with friends and later just the two of us. We planned our future together. He taught me to ride scooter, he helped me with studies. I used to love these 'dhaani churiyan', so he had got me two dozens of it. I used to wear them always. But one day I found out that the box was fallen down and the bangles had broken to pieces. I could recall no one else coming to our room. My friend Yamini and me were staying there on rent. We both were in same class and were best of friends".
"Yamini was a bright student. That day she had some doubts in her major subject. So I had asked Yashovardhan to help her out. Yamini seemed quite happy after their study session and I was happy for her that she was studying well. She scored the highest marks that year. She thanked Yash for the same. She decided to treat him with dinner. I had gone to my hometown as my mother wasn't feeling well. Yash had called me and told that Yamini wants to give him a treat. I had no problem with that. But little did I know, that the best friend whom I trusted and loved like a sister, would betray me. She spiked Yash's drink and he got sloshed. And.....and..... ", Nalini got a lump in her throat, in a chocking voice she said, "Your mother deceived me Navya".
Navya sat there, flustered. "My mother?Yamini was my maa?", she murmured.
"Yes. Yamini was your maa", Nalini said, letting her tears flow profusely. "When I got to know that Yamini was pregnant, I decided to not get in their way. Yash apologised to me thousand times but how could I forgive him? How could things be like before again? I left the city once and for all".
"Later, I came to know that Yash didn't accept Yamini's love. Yamini called me and said that Yash never knew about her pregnancy. And then, you were in her lap. When I met her, she said that she was repenting for her deeds. She had lost her best friend, she never got the love of her life and now she was severely ill, so had to leave you too. Yamini asked me if I was married. I told her that I never wished to, after breaking up with Yash, I never desired to experience love anymore. Yamini then held my hand and pleaded that I should take care of you. I looked at you. Your innocent face and giggles broke my heart. I lifted you in my arms and assured Yamini to look after you. And Yamini bid her last goodbye".
"Maa, you must've been in pain everytime you saw me. Didn't you resent me even once?", Navya asked Nalini, with teary eyes.
"Beta, it was never your fault. Why would I blame you? Navya, your name is given by me. NAVYA has Nalini, Yamini and Yash in it. It was fate. I had unrequited love in my destiny. No one can change the destiny beta.", Nalini said.
"Wait maa. It's not over yet. You both can still meet. I want to meet my father too. There must be some address written, let me check", Navya started going through the letter.
"I hope you are a happy family. By the time you receive this letter, Nalini, this Yashovardhan of yours must've vanished away for good. I'm writing this letter lying on the hospital bed. I know these are my last moments, I can feel so. I cheated on you and I lived a life of repentance. I decided to write to you finally, so that I can leave this world with lesser guilt. I wanted to gift you the dhaani churiyan on our wedding day, but that never happened so sending them for you now. Please forgive me if possible.
The man who loved you all his life,
Yash."
The tears from Navya's eyes drenched the corner of the page. She glanced at Nalini. Nalini was putting on the bangles one by one. She wore all the bangles in both her hands. She took her hands close to her ears and jiggled them. The jingling sound was like music to her ears. Navya hugged her maa. Nalini kissed her forehead and kept running her hand over the bangles, her 'dhaani churiyan'.

Wow Jui. Beautifully written. The story left a quiet ache in my heart. The lovely green "dhani churiyan" carried so much love and sorrow at the same time. Those unspoken emotions, the missed chances, and their silent devotion made the love triangle deeply moving. Loved it ❤️. Keep writing.
