The car reached the dorm. Neha hurriedly tried to get down, thanking Neil for the lift.
Neil handed over his mobile phone to her, "Save your number", he said. Neha was indecisive about giving her number, but Neil's gaze thawed her emotions.
She typed her phone number and gave back his phone, thanked him again and rushed to the dorm.
Neil looked at her phone number, thought for a minute and saved it as "My destiny".
He smirked and drove off.
Neha reached her room, panting. Her roommate was listening to the song by Roxette,
"It must've been love, but it's over now,
Lay a whisper, on my pillow,
Leave the winter, on the ground,
I wake up lonely, there's air of silence,
In the bedroom and all around,
Touch me now, I close my eyes
And dream away.....".
Neha closed her eyes and her thoughts took her back to college days.
This flamboyant boy who never attended his lectures, suddenly had started coming regularly to the classroom. He was always dressed in branded clothes which meant he was from an influential family. He sat on the last bench. Many a times was called out, during ongoing lecture, for basketball practice.
Neha was aware of Neil's presence around. Neha was from a middle class family, always dressed in simple, sober clothes. She wasn't very trendy nor was as beautiful as some of her fashion savvy classmates.
She wanted to talk to Neil but his aura made him inaccessible. She used to secretly peek at him while he was passing by. He was on her mind, frequently now.
"Would he ever reply to my hello?", she used to ponder. "His standard must be high, why would he look at me?", she used to remind herself. But she had already, unknowingly fallen for him. She had never felt this way. His cogitation had besmeared her heart and mind.
She finally plucked up courage, one day, and decided to talk to Neil. However, Neil stopped coming to college, all of a sudden.
She swung by the basketball court, she checked the canteen, she searched the parking lot, for days. But he wasn't seen anywhere. Neil had disappeared unexpectedly. Neha was heartbroken and anguished. Her first love was marooned, unconfessed and unrequited.
Autumn had just transfigured to winter. The roads inside the college premises were covered with fallen coral leaves. As people walked crushing the dry leaves, the rustling sounds filled the air. The chilly wind made it more unbearable.
As the gust of wind blew, the window glass of her dorm room banged on the pane.
Neha covered her face with her palms and wailed copiously.
The song in the background was now loud and clear,
"And it's a hard Winter's day,
I dream away,
It must've been love, but it's over now,
It was all that I wanted,
Now, I am living without,
It must've been love, but it's over now,
It must've been good, but I lost it somehow,
It's where the water flows,
It's where the wind blows....".
