"This is Smitha and this is Tara", Akash introduced the girls to each other.
"Why does your 'genius' sound like 'playboy' to me Smitha?", Akash raised one eyebrow and questioned Smitha.
Smitha stuck out her tongue trying to tease her brother. " Playboy and you Anna? You never ever had a girlfriend before", she said.
Tara had a smile on her face watching the duo having a fun banter.
"Tara is not my girlfriend. She's a friend though and yes she's a girl so....", Akash said looking at Tara, not making her feel uncomfortable. Tara lowered her gaze and seemed demure.
"And mind you she's your senior here", he warned Smitha.
"Oh is it....I'm sorry Tara, I must've misread the air. But I haven't seen you before", Smitha said looking at Tara carefully.
"It's okay Smitha! I got admitted to the college today itself. I'm new here so please guide me through the campus", Tara said humbly.
"Yes ofcourse at your service Mam. Anna's friend is my friend", Smitha put her hand forward gesturing Tara to shake hands. Tara shook hands with her and her face lit up with a bright smile.
Akash kept staring at Tara. He hadn't seen her this happy.
"Anna did you order the food? Did you order some 'saaru'?", Smitha asked. And Akash had to shift attention from Tara to Smitha. "What do you want to eat?", Akash asked.
"Anna are you even listening to me? We already discussed right? Curry and sabji with some rice. I'm starving" Smitha complained.
"And you Tara?", Akash asked.
"Same. Whatever you both are having", Tara said.
"But Anna how is Tara your girlfr.....I mean friend?", Smitha asked looking at both of them.
"We met at the airport", they both answered in unison and then glanced at each other.
"Oho!", Smitha said looking at them both. She sensed something was brewing by the look of it.
The food was served and the three of them devoured it.
"Aiyyo! I've to hurry up Anna. Sorry Tara, let's meet again. I've a lecture to attend. Economics, can't miss it, my favourite subject", she added, trying not be a 3rd wheel any longer.
"Economics is my favourite too", Tara's eyes sparkled as she said.
"Her hazel eyes look like twinkling stars", Akash thought. Tara was making deeper impressions on him.
"Smitha if you want any help in Eco let me know. I'll be happy to help. I will have to start my classes from tomorrow I guess. I've some paperwork to finish today", Tara said.
"Sorry Tara I can't accompany you today. Anna please help her out", Smitha said as she got up in a hurry. "If you are free tomorrow evening let's meet Anna", she added.
"Most probably, I will know the status of my deal by tomorrow morning. So I'll be free by evening. Smitha I'll come to pick you up then. When does your last lecture end?", Akash asked.
"By 5 p.m. Anna", Smitha said and looked at Tara. "Why don't you join us if you are free too?".
"Ummm...I don't have any friends here, you are the first one Smitha. I would love to join you. But I'll have to get permission from my nani (grandmother)", Tara said, sounding excited at the same time unsure.
"Nani? Your grandmother? Is she strict? Do you still need permission to go out?", Smitha was surprised.
Akash signalled her not to ask more. "Tara's nani is protective of her. She's her only grand daughter, right Tara?", Akash tried to cover up for Tara.
Tara gave a subtle smile to Akash appreciating his help and nodded looking at Smitha, "Right!", she said.
Smitha waved a goodbye to them and left.
"Why does Smitha call you Anna?", Tara asked.
"In Kanada Anna means elder brother. We are originally from Karnataka", Akash explained.
"And what do you call a friend?", Tara asked.
"Literally, it means 'snehita' but we usually just say friend", Akash replied.
"Snehita! Will you help me out with the paperwork?", Tara smiled and asked.
"Haudu, nuru pratishata", Akash replied.
"What pratishata what?, Tara asked as she giggled.
"100 percent yes Tara", Akash chuckled too.
